St. Catherine of Alexandria was a well educated girl (perhaps too well?) around the 4th century in Egypt, it's quite probable that she actually existed. She opposed the persecution of christians by the romans, and Maxentius, the roman ruler at the time (who had been in decline for centuries) sentenced her to death by the torture wheel. The legend(or not) says that the wheel broke when she touched it. It impressed quite a lot of people, so the romans tried to stop it by beheading her. In this drawing she is shown beheading Maxentius herself.

The torture wheel became known as Catherine's wheel, and unfortunately was widely use for torture during the Middle Ages inquisition.

About the "vintage effect" prints:

If you like coffee smell - you'd love the vintage effect even more! Each one of these limited edition prints was treated individually, each one differently, with coffee, black ink and love.
